How it works
A byte is 8 bits. Network speeds count bits (100 Mbit/s), while files and disks count bytes. So a 100 Mbit/s link moves at most 12.5 MB of data a second, before headers.
Decimal units step by 1,000: 1 kB is 1,000 bytes and 1 GB is 1,000,000,000 bytes. Binary units step by 1,024: 1 KiB is 1,024 bytes and 1 GiB is 1,073,741,824 bytes. The binary names (KiB, MiB, GiB) come from the IEC, to stop the two meanings sharing one name.
That's why a "1 TB" drive shows as about 931 GB on some computers. The maker counts 1,000,000,000,000 bytes, which is 1 TB. Windows divides by 1,024 three times and calls the result "GB", though it means GiB: 931.32 GiB. macOS uses decimal units and shows 1 TB. No space is missing.
Memory (RAM) is usually sold in binary sizes, so a "16 GB" module holds 16 GiB. To work out how long a file takes to move over a link, use the transfer time calculator.
