Abbreviations with more than one meaning
- BST can mean British Summer Time (UTC+1), Bangladesh Standard Time (UTC+6).
- IST can mean Irish Standard Time (UTC+1), Israel Standard Time (UTC+2), India Standard Time (UTC+5:30).
- CST can mean Central Standard Time (UTC-6), Cuba Standard Time (UTC-5), China Standard Time (UTC+8).
- CDT can mean Central Daylight Time (UTC-5), Cuba Daylight Time (UTC-4).
- MST can mean Mountain Standard Time (UTC-7), Malaysia Standard Time (UTC+8).
- PST can mean Pacific Standard Time (UTC-8), Philippine Standard Time (UTC+8).
- AST can mean Atlantic Standard Time (UTC-4), Arabia Standard Time (UTC+3).
- AMT can mean Amazon Time (UTC-4), Armenia Time (UTC+4).
How it works
Abbreviations like EST or CEST are handy in conversation, but they aren't a standard. Nobody assigns them, and several mean different things in different places. IST is India Standard Time (UTC+5:30), Irish Standard Time (UTC+1) or Israel Standard Time (UTC+2). CST can be US Central, China or Cuba.
Many abbreviations also change with the seasons. New York is on EST (UTC−5) in winter and EDT (UTC−4) in summer, and people often write EST all year by mistake. The "In use now" badge shows which one applies today.
Software should never store or parse times by abbreviation. Use an IANA zone name such as America/New_York, which knows the daylight saving rules, or a numeric offset such as -04:00. Email Date headers use numeric offsets for this reason, like +0530.
