How it works
Daylight saving time (DST) moves clocks forward an hour in spring, so evenings stay light longer, and back again in autumn. Not every place does it. India, China, Japan and most of Africa keep the same time all year. Places that do change pick their own dates, so the gap between two cities can change for a few weeks a year.
When clocks go forward, an hour is skipped: in London on the last Sunday of March, 01:00 jumps straight to 02:00. When they go back, an hour happens twice. Times in that hour are ambiguous unless you also give the UTC offset, which is why logs and email headers should always include one.
The dates come from your browser's copy of the IANA time zone database, the same one phones and servers use. Countries sometimes change their rules at short notice, so dates many years ahead may change.
